We May Have Started a New Family Tradition: Boo Mix + Movie Night

I think we accidentally started a new family tradition. And honestly? I’m not mad about it.
It started with a bunch of spooky candy, a few bowls and two kids who were VERY invested in the process.
We separated all the candy, spread everything out and let MJ and SJ build their own Boo Mix. No fancy recipe. No complicated instructions. Just a whole lot of excitement over choosing what went into their cups.
And because apparently candy mixing wasn’t enough of an event, we ended the evening with a family movie night.
I’m pretty sure we’ll be doing this again next October.
Micah’s Memo: Our Boo Mix Movie Night
What it is: A build-your-own Halloween candy mix followed by a cozy family movie night.
Best for: Families looking for easy October activities with kids.
What you’ll need: An assortment of spooky or fall-themed candy, small bowls, cups or treat bags, and a family-friendly movie.
Time needed: About 10–15 minutes to set everything up, plus movie time.
The best part: The kids get to make their own creations.
How We Made Our Boo Mix
First, we gathered whatever spooky candy we could find at Dollar Tree plus a few snacks.
And when I say whatever, I mean it. This is not one of those activities where you need 17 specific ingredients from three different stores.
We separated the candy into individual bowls so the kids could see all their options.
Then came the important part: letting them build their own Boo Mix.
They got to choose what they wanted, how much of each candy to add and what their final mix would look like.
Watching them make their decisions was just as entertaining as the activity itself.
And Then Came Movie Night
Once everyone had their Boo Mix, we got comfortable and put on a movie.
That’s it.
No elaborate setup. No Pinterest-perfect decorations. Just a simple family movie night with a little October twist.
And sometimes those are the evenings that turn into the best memories.
A Little Fun Can Become a Family Tradition
I love finding easy family activities that don’t require a huge budget or hours of preparation.
Our DIY Boo Mix gave the kids a chance to make choices, practice a little counting and sorting, and enjoy creating something of their own.
Plus, it gave us another reason to spend the evening together.
If you’re looking for easy Halloween movie night ideas for kids, consider this your sign to grab some candy, set out a few bowls and let the kids take over.
Just choose candy that’s appropriate for your children’s ages and supervise while they eat.
I think this might be a new Johnson family tradition.
